Is your patient suitable for bariatric surgery?

When you refer your patient to Dr Benedict Mackay for bariatric care, they will undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to ensure the patient is an appropriate candidate for bariatric surgery.

Dr Benedict Mackay uses the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners guidelines for bariatric surgery.

One of the key criteria for being a bariatric patient is your BMI (Body Mass Index).

According to BMI categories:

40 - 49.9
is obese
50+
is morbidly obese
30 - 39.9
is super obese

Use our BMI tool to find out if your weight is putting you at risk.

Surgery for obesity is considered an appropriate choice for patients:

  • With a BMI greater than 35
  • With a BMI greater than 30 and one or more obesity-related illness
  • Who have tried non-operative weight loss solutions without long-term success

In certain circumstances, patients with lower BMI may be candidates.
